The medical assisting program prepares the graduate to assist the physician with the care and treatment of patients in both administrative and clinical procedures. Some of these administrative functions include patient reception and scheduling appointments, word processing and forms preparation, ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment, and maintaining patient records. Examples of clinical functions include assisting with general physical examination and related patient procedures, collection and processing of laboratory specimens, administering medications, and instructions to patients as specified by the physician.

Students who complete the medical assisting program satisfactorily are eligible to apply to take the AAMA national certification exam.

Career Opportunities

In this role, the medical assistant may be employed in doctor’s offices, clinics, and health maintenance organizations.

Medical Assisting Program Purpose

The Medical Assisting Program provides students with a complete educational experience for those who wish to become part of the health-care team. The Medical Assisting Program provides each student opportunities to learn and develop competence in assisting skills, patient care, communication skills, critical thinking, and technical skills that will permit the student to become a successful Medical Assistant. Integrated educational activities include lecture, laboratory activities, case studies, hands-on practicum experience.

The mission of the WCCC Medical Assisting Program is to prepare medical assistants who excel in the knowledge, skill, and professionalism required by employers and the medical community.


Program Goals

The goals of the Medical Assisting Program are to produce graduates who will:
  • demonstrate competencies in the knowledge, skills, and behaviors required of an entry- level Medical Assistant. 
  •  practice health and safety policies and procedures necessary to the establishment of a safe working environment.
  • display effective oral, written, and technical communication skills. 
  •  show a commitment to professional growth, development, and life-long learning.
  • develop community and ethical knowledge while providing health care services to diverse populations.
  • be prepared to successfully pass the AAMA national certification exam.
