FAQ — Is Online Learning right for me?Online courses offer the opportunity to take classes using your home computer or a computer located at another site such as a public library or the WCCC computer labs. You do all of your coursework online: read assignments, take part in discussions, submit work, and interact with instructors and classmates via the Internet. Online courses are not self-paced, but you can do your course work at times convenient for you. You should be able to devote at least 10 - 12 hours of study, reading, and work per week for each three credit online class in which you are enrolled. Students who work well on their own, are familiar with the Internet, have good reading comprehension skills, and basic typing skills are most likely to be successful in online courses. Try this self-quiz to see if you are ready to take an online course. Return to Top FAQ — How do I register for online courses? You can register for classes in person, by mail, fax, telephone, or online.
Return to Top FAQ — What happens if I register late?WCCC allows students to register through the end of the first week of classes without instructor permission, and through the end of the second week of classes with instructor permission. It will take one business day to activate your Blackboard account and course after you register through Student Services. Return to Top FAQ — How much do online courses cost?Online courses at WCCC cost the same as any of our other courses. Remember to factor in the cost of textbooks and supplies when determining how much to budget for a semester. Return to Top FAQ — Will WCCC's online courses transfer to another school?WCCC's online courses are listed on your academic transcript just like any other courses. Many colleges and universities in Pennsylvania accept transfer credits from WCCC. Please contact the Student Services department at your institution to determine if they will accept transfer credits from WCCC for specific classes. Not all classes at WCCC transfer to all colleges and universities, so check with the college to which you wish to transfer credits before you take your course at WCCC. Return to Top FAQ — How do I know when to start my class?Online classes begin the first day of the semester. See the schedule of classes for the exact dates of each semester. The start dates for your classes are also listed on your official class schedule. You are responsible for logging into Blackboard on the first day of the semester and checking each class for which you are registered. Each instructor will post a welcoming announcement with instructions on what to do next. Most instructors do NOT mail anything to students prior to the start of classes. Return to Top FAQ — How do I withdraw from an online course?Students who wish to withdraw from an online course must follow these steps.
Students have the option of visiting the college campus in Youngwood or an Education Center to complete a Withdrawal Form in person. Contact Student Services at 724.925.4196 for more information and withdrawal deadlines. Return to Top FAQ — Where can I get help with my subject material?Tutorial services are offered through the College Learning Center at no cost to students. Peer and professional tutors provide individual and small group tutoring in most courses. To make arrangements for tutoring call 724.925.4135, 1.800.262.2103 extension 4135, or send email to snadenm@wccc.edu Return to Top FAQ — How do I take tests?Instructors may choose to give their tests online or they may require students to take some tests in person. In person testing may be done at any of WCCC's education centers located in Westmoreland, Greene, Indiana and Fayette counties or through proctored testing. The process for identifying a test proctor and the proctor form can be found on the Getting Started page. Return to Top FAQ — WCCC Library: How do I access the Library from online? The WCCC Library offers service to online students through access to its online catalog and databases. The library's web site can be found by clicking here. Contact librarian Kathleen Keefe with questions or concerns at 724.925.4101, or email her at keefek@wccc.edu Return to Top FAQ —
