How do I know which version of Internet Explorer is on my computer?

Internet Explorer version 8 is not a supported web browser and currently does not work appropriately with Blackboard. Please do not use.

There are a couple of ways to determine which version of Internet Explorer is on your computer. The quickest way is a visual check.

Internet Explorer Version 7 looks like this. The Menu Bar is not visible and there are tabs for each web page. Use the Page and Tool buttons to the right of the tabs to access options such as: Cut, Copy, Paste, Text Size, Pop-up Blocker, and Internet Options. Use the drop down arrow on the Printer button to access Page Setup. For help configuring and using Version 7 Click Here.

Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer Version 6 looks like this. To determine for sure if it is Version 6 or an older version, click on Help in the Menu Bar and then choose About Internet Explorer. In the window that appears look for a version number. For help configuring Version 6 Click Here.

Dealing with Pop-up Blockers (I can't open Blackboard from CampusConnections.)                           View Video

WCCC now has something called Single Sign On. This means you have one username and password for CampusConnections and Blackboard. To login to Blackboard you must first login to CampusConnections. After logging into CampusConnections click on the Blackboard tab. Pop-up blockers must be disabled or turned off because Blackboard will open in a new window.

Determine which version of Internet Explorer is on your computer by clicking here. Then follow the directions to configure your version.

It is possible to have more than one pop-up blocker installed on a computer. For example, some anti-virus, spam, or firewall programs include pop-up blockers. There are even extra toolbars that can be added to Internet Explorer that contain pop-up blockers. Two of the more popular ones are Yahoo and Google. Click here for help with Google and click here for help with Yahoo.

Sometimes pop-up blockers can be temporarily turned off by holding down the CTRL or ALT key on your keyboard. Try holding down one of these keys while left clicking on the Blackboard tab in CampusConnections.

Or Right Single Click on the word Blackboard below the Blackboard tab then left click on Open in New Window in the shortcut menu that appears.

The Blackboard web site seems to be down (I get a "page not found" or similar error).

Either you are not connected to the Internet or there may be problems on our end. To troubleshoot this error perform the following test. Are you able to gain access to http://cnn.com or another web site? If so, there may be problems on our end. Please call or email us right away. If you cannot reach CNN or other web sites then your connection to the Internet is not operating. Contact your Internet Service Provider.

I cannot log into Blackboard.

Remember that you will not be able to enter your online course until the first day of classes.

See Getting Started for more information on your username and password.

I can log into Blackboard, but can't find my class.

  • Courses are not available until the first day of the semester.

  • Online classes are listed on your schedule with a "W" suffix. For example, if you see ART_157_WA on your schedule then the class is offered online.

  • For all other courses, contact the instructor to find out if Blackboard will be used as a supplement.

  • Do you have a seat in the class? If you have been put on a "wait" list, your user account will become active in your online class only if and when a seat becomes available.

  • There are two tabs in the upper left corner of the Blackboard screen after you login: WCCC and Courses. Try clicking on the Courses tab.

I can't post anything to the class discussion board.

This probably means that your browser is out of date and cannot properly read the coding language in which online courses are written. To determine whether your browser might be the problem, see the Browser section of Basic Skill & Requirements. For step-by-step instructions go to How Do I?

My professor wants files in RTF — what is that?

RTF stands for Rich Text Format; it is a universal word processing format. You can open an RTF file using most word processing programs (like Microsoft Word) and on any platform (PC or Macintosh). To save your work in RTF format, go to the File menu in your word processing software and choose "Save As." Use the drop down menu under the text box with the file name to select "Rich Text Format (RTF)." RTF files that contain images can get quite large. Saving the file as a Word file will actually make the file smaller.

NOTE: If you're using a Mac, follow these steps and then add .rtf to the end of the file name. This is necessary so that users on PCs will be able to open the file.

I am having trouble getting into the "Virtual Classroom" chat.

Try the following remedies:

  1. An up-to-date version of Java is required. The screen that appears in Blackboard after clicking on Join for a Collaboration session includes a link to update Java if necessary.

  2. Pop-up blockers should be turned off.

  3. There are a number of firewall and anti-virus program settings that can prevent a Collaboration session from opening on individual computer

I am using AOL despite all the warnings about doing so.

You are very brave. It is certainly possible to use AOL as your Internet Service provider and to have success in connecting to our Blackboard web site, but keep this in mind:

Because of the nature of the problems between AOL and our Blackboard software, we regret that we cannot offer technical support to AOL users beyond what you have just read.

I am not getting email from my instructor or classmates.

Remember that when your user name and password were created for Blackboard, your email address was listed automatically as your CampusConnections account. If you do not want email sent to your CampusConnections account, you can change your default email address in Blackboard. Go to the email section of Getting Started for instructions.

Check your email account settings to see if email from your instructors and/or classmates is being placed in a Junk / SPAM folder or deleted.

Are you using a Hotmail email account? Hotmail accounts may block emails sent from your instructor or classmates. Change your profile to your CampusConnections email address and use it for your classes.
