Overview

Microsoft Office 2007 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. The new 2007 version saves files in a new format. Previous versions of any of these software programs CANNOT open the new file format, however, Office 2007 can open files saved in any Office version.

So what do you do when someone sends you a file in the 2007 format and your computer has an older software version? Below are three options. In the meantime, please be patient with others when you receive or send a file in the 2007 format. Take into consideration what software version they may have on their computer.

Options

  1. The easiest thing to do is ask the person to save the file in an older version of the program and resend it to you. The next section will walk you through this simple process.

  2. If you have an older version of any of the Office Products (version 2000, 2002 (XP), or 2003) then you can download and install a "converter." This will allow you to open the new 2007 file formats without upgrading to Office 2007. Please note that this converter does NOT upgrade your software to the 2007 version of Office. It merely allows you to open files that were saved in the 2007 format.

  3. Consider upgrading to Office 2007. Click this link to find a number of options to purchase software while you are a student at WCCC.
