The Westmoreland County Community College Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Program has been in existence since 1973 and the Practical Nursing (PN) Program since 1971. The Practical Nursing (PN) Program closed in December 2015.

To meet the needs of the surrounding communities, the PA-SBN granted approval to offer the Associate Degree Nursing Programs at the Indiana site in Indiana, PA in 2001; and to offer the evening/weekend ADN program at the Greene County site in Waynesburg, PA in 2004. The Greene Center currently offers classes in the daylight/weekend option.

A review of admission criteria, retention/attrition rates, and available facilities was conducted in 2006. Based on the data collected, the following admission criteria revisions were implemented in 2007: increasing the graduate point average (GPA) from 2.0 to 2.5 and requiring a “C” or better in all nursing and co-requisite course work. In addition, Westmoreland planned simulation laboratories for the nursing departments and applied for grants to secure items for these labs, which included high, mid, and low fidelity simulators. The grants were secured to supplement college funds to employ open lab instructors and instructors at the three sites.

In spring 2008, a class of thirty students was admitted to the revised three-year Evening/Weekend program, at Level I. This enables Westmoreland to admit and graduate students in both the fall and spring semester. Because of the fall and spring admissions to the ADN program, LPN students seeking advanced placement are able to enter into second level course work in either semester after successful completion of NSG 200 LPN Transition to the ADN Program and NSG 114 Health and Physical Assessment. The NSG 200 course was developed to improve the LPNs knowledge of the program components, critical thinking, and nursing process and to validate competencies of nursing skills.

In the fall of 2011 as a response to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) “The Future of Nursing Report: Leading Change, Advancing Health” in October 2010, changes in the NCLEX Test Map and no enrollment in the Practical Nurse (PN) Program option, the faculty identified the need to revise the current curriculum.  This revision resulted in the addition of a Pharmacology course, a Nursing Assessment Course and a combined Pediatric/Obstetric Course. With the PN Program option ended, the Level I courses were planned to be presented and tested at the ADN level. Human Growth and Development was removed as a co-requisite course and this content was planned to be integrated throughout the curriculum. With these revisions in mind the faculty held fast to the Five Critical Elements (Caring, Competency, Communication, Critical Thinking and Commitment) and the 72 credit limit for the Associate Degree in Nursing in alignment with the College’s Institutional Learning Outcomes. The revised ADN curriculum was offered for Level I beginning with the Fall 2013 and Level II in the beginning of Fall 2014. The ATI Assessment continues to be incorporated throughout the two-year program to benchmark student achievement. The RN Predictor continues to be utilized to predict NCLEX success. The first cohort to graduate from the revised curriculum in May 2015 achieved a 93% NCLEX pass rate for first time test takers.

Significant changes to the schedule include the completion of BIO 171 and CPT 150 prior to the Level I, first semester. Additionally, the part-time Evening/Weekend program at Youngwood requires the completion of BIO 171, BIO 172, PSY 160, ENG 161, and CPT 150 prior to the Level I first semester. All pre-requisites, co-requisites, and nursing courses require a minimum of a "C" or better for progression.

The use of technology has increased greatly. Faculty use Blackboard TM Learning System (Blackboard TM) and High, Mid, and Low Fidelity simulation in the classroom and nursing skills labs. In addition, Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI), a nursing assessment tool is incorporated throughout the two-year program to benchmark student achievement nationally.

Upon the retirement of the Associate Degree Nursing Program’s Director on November 4, 2015, Sue W. Snyder MSN, RN was appointed Interim Nursing Program Director. On May 14, 2016 Mrs. Snyder was then hired as the Full-time Associate Degree Nursing Program Director with approval from the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Following Mrs. Snyder’s appointment, three additional ADN/RN to Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) articulation agreements have been added to increase both the availability and convenience for students to continue their formal education.
